Power Flushing in Dartford and Kent

Every central heating system corrodes a little from the inside. Over the years the steel in your radiators breaks down into a black iron oxide sludge, which settles in the bottom of radiators, narrows pipework and gets dragged through the boiler. Add limescale from the hard water we have across Dartford and north Kent, and the system has to work harder to deliver the same heat.

The results are familiar: radiators that are cold at the bottom, rooms that take an age to warm up, a boiler that kettles and bangs, and higher energy use. Sludge is also a common cause of pump, valve and heat exchanger faults, which is why so many of our boiler breakdown and repair call-outs trace back to dirty system water.

A power flush connects a dedicated pumping unit to your heating circuit and drives water and cleaning chemicals through it at high flow and low pressure, lifting the sludge out and carrying it away. Once the water runs clear, we dose the system with inhibitor so the corrosion does not simply start again.

Our engineers are Gas Safe registered and work on all boiler brands, in homes from Dartford town centre out to Bexleyheath, Gravesend, Swanley and Sidcup.

Warning Signs

Signs Your Heating Needs a Power Flush

One symptom on its own can have other causes. Several together, especially in a system that has not been cleaned for years, is a strong indication that sludge is the problem.

Radiators cold at the bottom

Hot across the top, cold along the bottom or in the middle is the classic sign. Sludge has settled where the water should be flowing. Cold at the top is different and usually just means trapped air.

Black or brown water

If the water that comes out when you bleed a radiator is dark, gritty or rust-coloured, that is iron oxide in suspension and it is travelling round your whole system.

Slow to heat up

The heating takes far longer to warm the house than it used to, or some rooms never quite reach temperature even with the boiler running flat out.

Noisy boiler or pump

Banging, rumbling or a kettle-like noise from the boiler suggests deposits on the heat exchanger. A pump that hums or struggles may be pushing against a restriction.

Radiators need constant bleeding

Corrosion inside the system produces gas. If the same radiators need bleeding again and again, the water chemistry is working against you.

Repeat faults and lockouts

Pumps, diverter valves and heat exchangers that keep failing, or a boiler that overheats and locks out, often share one root cause: contaminated water.

How It Works

Our Power Flushing Process

From first assessment to a clean, protected system, this is what happens on the day and why each step matters.

01

Assess

We inspect the boiler, radiators, valves and pipework, check the condition of the system water and confirm that sludge is the cause and that the system is fit to be flushed.

02

Connect

Floors and surfaces around the working area are protected, then the power flushing unit is connected into the heating circuit at the most suitable point for your system.

03

Flush

High-powered equipment forces water and specialist cleaning chemicals through the whole system, reversing the direction of flow to break compacted sludge loose.

04

Radiator by radiator

Each radiator is isolated and flushed in turn so the full force of the flow goes through it, rather than taking the easy route around the cleaner parts of the system.

05

Rinse and treat

The dirty water is flushed to drain until it runs clear, then a chemical inhibitor is added to protect against future corrosion and sludge.

06

Test

We test the water quality, run the heating and check that radiators heat evenly, water flows freely and the boiler is operating as it should.

Good To Know

Timings, Filters and Aftercare

How long does a power flush take?

It depends on the size and condition of your central heating system. A typical home is completed within a working day. Larger properties, systems with a lot of radiators, or pipework that is heavily sludged can run into a second day, so the full range is anywhere from a few hours to two days.

We will give you a realistic time when we have seen the system. Your heating will be off while we work, and we will tell you in advance if the hot water is affected.

Magnetic filters and inhibitor

A flush removes the sludge that is already there. Two things stop it coming back. Inhibitor is a chemical added to the system water that slows the corrosion which creates sludge in the first place. It is dosed at the end of every flush and its level should be checked at your annual boiler service.

A magnetic filter sits on the pipework by the boiler and catches iron particles as the water circulates, before they reach the pump or heat exchanger. If your system does not have one, we will recommend fitting one at the same visit. It is emptied and cleaned as part of routine servicing.

Power flushing before a new boiler

Connecting a new boiler to a dirty system is the fastest way to shorten its life. Boiler manufacturers expect the system to be cleaned and treated when a boiler is installed, and warranty terms commonly depend on it. If you are planning a new boiler installation, we assess the existing system and tell you what level of cleaning it needs.

Honest Advice

When a Power Flush Is Not the Answer

A power flush fixes sludge. It does not fix everything, and we would rather tell you that before you book than after. These are the situations where we will recommend something else.

The fault is somewhere else

A single cold radiator can be a stuck thermostatic valve, trapped air or a system that needs balancing. A failing pump or diverter valve can look like sludge too. We diagnose first. Our guide to a radiator not heating up covers the simple checks.

Radiators are past saving

Old radiators that are badly corroded can be held together by the very deposits a flush removes. Cleaning them may expose pinhole leaks. Where that risk is real, replacing those radiators is the better use of your money.

Pipework is fully blocked

Narrow microbore pipework that has blocked solid may not clear with flushing alone. Sometimes a section of pipe has to be cut out and replaced before the rest of the system can be cleaned.

The system is fairly clean

A newer system with clear water and a working filter does not need a full power flush. A lighter chemical clean, or simply topping up the inhibitor at a service, may be all it needs.

FAQs

Power Flushing Questions

What is a power flush?

A power flush is a deep clean of your central heating system. A pumping unit is connected to the heating circuit and circulates water and cleaning chemicals at high flow to dislodge sludge, rust and scale from radiators, pipework and the boiler. The dirty water is flushed out and replaced with clean water treated with inhibitor.

How do I know if I need a power flush?

The most common signs are radiators that are cold at the bottom, dark water when you bleed a radiator, heating that is slow to warm up, a noisy boiler and radiators that need bleeding repeatedly. If you have several of these, an engineer should check the system water. We will tell you plainly if a flush is not what you need.

How long does a power flush take?

Depending on the size and condition of the system, anywhere from a few hours to two days. Most homes are completed within a single working day. Larger properties and heavily sludged systems take longer.

Is power flushing messy?

It should not be. The flushing unit forms a sealed loop with your heating system and the dirty water is discharged to a drain through a hose. We protect the floor around the working area and radiators stay on the wall throughout.

Can a power flush cause leaks?

A power flush works at high flow rather than high pressure, so it does not strain a healthy system. What it can do is reveal a weakness that was already there, such as a corroded radiator where sludge was plugging a pinhole. That is why we assess the system first and tell you if any radiators or valves look at risk.

Do I need a power flush with a new boiler?

The system needs to be cleaned and treated when a new boiler goes in, and boiler warranties commonly depend on it. Whether that means a full power flush or a lighter clean depends on the state of the existing pipework and radiators. We check this as part of every boiler installation survey.

How often should a heating system be power flushed?

There is no fixed interval. A system that has been flushed properly, dosed with inhibitor and fitted with a magnetic filter can stay clean for many years, provided the inhibitor is checked and the filter is cleaned at each annual boiler service. It only needs flushing again if the symptoms return.
